What to Expect from Your First Lip Filler Treatment
Lip augmentation with injectable dermal fillers landed the #2 spot on the American Society for Plastic Surgeons’ 2023 Minimally Invasive Procedures report. According to their data, aestheticians plumped and reshaped 1,439,291 puckers, a 4% increase over 2022.
If you want to make a single change that can dramatically transform how you feel and are perceived, lip fillers fit the bill. Adding volume and shape to your lips instantly makes your face look younger because thin lips are associated with aging. Plump, sexy lips are also the most compelling facial feature after the eyes.
At Enrich Family Practice, Kelly Wenger, FNP, recommends hyaluronic-acid (HA) based dermal fillers such as Belotero BalanceⓇ and RadiesseⓇ for lip augmentation. The HA fillers tend to be flexible and integrate with your skin so that you can continue to make natural expressions after your treatment.
What can you expect from your first lip filler treatment? Here’s a sampling.
It doesn’t take long
The time it takes to achieve the lips of your dreams is much less than the time you spent dreaming of them. First, we discuss your goals. If you have photos of your ideal, we review them with you.
It’s important that you have a realistic vision of how your lips will look based on your natural lip anatomy. We discuss your likely outcome and the best type of fillers for the changes you want to make.
Start “small”
If you’re dreaming of a sexy pout, don’t try to get it all in one session. It’s better to be conservative and take a few sessions to gradually build up to the volume you seek.
You want to avoid looking over-filled, which is just as unattractive as lips that are too thin and aged-looking. In other words, you don’t want to wind up with duck lips.
Get a small improvement in volume and shape, and give your lips a month. During that time, your lips will heal and acclimate to your new look. You may discover that one session was enough to achieve your goal.
If you do overfill, don’t worry too much. We can dissolve the HA with another substance called hyaluronidase. However, it’s best not to get into that situation in the first place!
You can make a variety of changes.
The ideal lip proportions are 1 to 1.6 (i.e., upper lip to lower lip). We help you achieve that ideal.
But you may not just want to get plumper or thicker. You may also want to change the shape of your lips by revealing more vermilion, creating more of a cupid's bow, or resolving asymmetry.
It’s not very painful, nor is it pain-free
Don’t worry — we keep you as comfortable as possible. After cleaning your lips and perioral area with an antiseptic, we apply numbing cream that contains a combination of the anesthetics benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (BLT) to your lips. It takes about 15-30 minutes for your lips to become numb.
If you’re allergic to BLT, you don’t have to power through the pain. Instead, we give you a nerve block injection, which also takes 15-30 minutes to work.
In addition, some dermal fillers contain lidocaine or another anesthetic in their formulation. While you still feel pressure during the filler process, the injections shouldn’t hurt.
The results are instant
As with all HA dermal filler treatments, you leave our office with a new look. The HA dermal fillers immediately fill your lips with extra volume, recontouring your pout.
However, your lips may swell slightly from the injections, so you won’t see your final results for a few days once the inflammation subsides. Also, it takes time for the HA to integrate into your skin for a most natural shape.
Get ready to smile, laugh, etc.
Today’s dermal fillers are flexible and natural. Your lips look plump and kissable but still feel soft. You’re amazed by how a slight adjustment in your lips can significantly affect your entire face.
